The Aerospatiale SA.365N Dauphin 2 is a very successful medium helicopter that has been in production for over forty years. The one thousandth one was delivered in 2011 at which time it was in service with over 300 users.
The Dauphin 2 is a successful development of the earlier, unsuccessful, single engined Dauphin.
The prototype made its first flight on 24 January 1975 and they began entering use in December 1978.
They have remained in production ever since with the 1,000th Dauphin 2s being delivered in April 2011.
They have served in a wide variety of military and civil roles and several major variations and specialized versions have been developed and entered production including military and air-sea rescue version.
It has also been manufactured in China under licence as the Harbin Z-9.
This model represents G-HEMS, a Dauphin 2 flying for the London Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in the 1990s.
