The Breguet Atlantic is a long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. Some have also been modified for electronic intelligence gathering work. They have been used by the navies of several countries.
The Breguet Atlantic was designed to meet the requirement for a replacement for the Lockheed P-2 Neptune.
Development started in 1958 and the prototype first flew on 21 October 1961.
Initially 40 were ordered for France and 20 for Germany with deliveries made between 1965 and 1968.
They have subsequently also been flown by Italy, the Netherlands and Pakistan with 87 being manufactured.
A new version, the Atlantic 2 which was externally similar but with improved equipment, was supplied to France from 1989 with 28 being manufactured.
