The Dassault Rafale is a French multi-role fighter designed to replace all of France’s existing fighters and strike aircraft. It is capable of flying from aircraft carriers as well as land bases on a wide range of missions.
After participating in a European program to develop a next generation fighter the French government decided, in 1985 to develop its own fighter to replace all the existing fighters and strike aircraft in its inventory.
The resulting Dassault Rafale was capable of air force and naval operations.
The technology demonstrator was rolled out in December 1985 and made its first flight on 4 July 1986.
The significantly improved pre-production Rafale C01 made its first flight on 19 May 1991.
This model represents the first pre-production Rafale C as it was displayed at Farnborough in 1992.
