The Dornier Do-217J-1 was developed from the Do217E which was one of Germany’s main bombers during World War II.
The standard nose was replaced by one with a heavy armament of four cannon and four machine guns.
Initially designed to operate over the United Kingdom, it also had a bomb bay to carry a small bomb load.
Production began in March 1942 and 130 had been made by the end of the year.
