The Ilyushin Il-96 is a modern Russian long-haul widebody airliner, developed to compete with similar western manufactured airliners. However, it has not been very successful and only thirty have been manufactured.
The Ilyushin Il-96 is a shortened, long-range and advanced technology development of Russia’s first widebody airliner, the Ilyushin Il-86.
It is equipped with modern avionics developed in Russia to international standards.
The first Il-96 flight took place on 28 September 1988 and they began entering service with Aeroflot in December 1992.
Despite a low sale price the Il-96 has not been able to compete with similar western long-haul airliners such as the Airbus A.340 and the Boeing 777 so only 29 had been produced to the end of 2012.
Most are operated by Russian airlines.
