The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the most powerful aircraft to see service flying from aircraft carriers during World War II. They were very useful and successful so they continued in service with several air force well after that war.
The Vought F4U-2 was a special night fighter conversion of the standard F4U-1 day fighter.
The modification included replacing one machine gun with a wing mounted radar pod.
Twenty two were converted from the F4U-1 production line and served with VF(N)101 and VMF(N)-532.
In VF(N)-101 service they were given a special colour scheme with black painted on upper surfaces to tone down the usual blue colouring.
This model represents a F4U-2 frown from either the USS Intrepid or USS Enterprise in early 1944.
